Philip Zilcken was an art critic, copyist, publicist, painter, draughtsman, reproduction engraver, photographer, engraver, lithographer, artist biographer, etcher. He drew and painted still lifes, landscapes and city views with loose brush strokes, often inspired by his travels to France, Italy and Egypt. He is considered one of the most important Dutch Orientalist artists of his time. As an etcher he achieved great fame for his technical skills. He is also known for his etchings after works by painters of the Hague School. Zilcken made etchings of paintings by Hendrik Willem Mesdag (1831-1915) who belonged to the Hague School and is best known for the Panorama Mesdag in Scheveningen, his seascapes, fishing boats and bumboats.
