The rare deluxe edition – limited to only 100 copies, with eight proof engravings, each in duplicate (one coloured, one plain) – of Field & Tuer’s 1887 reissue of Charles Lamb’s ‘Beauty and the Beast’, including a scholarly introduction by Andrew Lang.
‘Beauty and the Beast’ is one of the best-known fairy tales in the world, with a long history including many versions and adaptations. The poetical version here, set in Persia and attributed to the essayist, poet and critic Charles Lamb, was first published (anonymously) by M. J. Godwin in 1811. In his introduction, the scholar and folklorist Andrew Lang – creator of the famous ‘coloured’ Fairy Books – discusses the origins of the story, and the question of whether or not Lamb actually wrote the poem.
The book includes the title page (in facsimile) of the 1811 edition, as well as ‘Beauty’s Song at Her Spinning Wheel’, set to music by Mr Whitaker. The illustrations, taken from the original edition, are uncredited.
Exceptionally scarce due to the fragile binding – here with the contents very well preserved for age. I can see only one other copy of the deluxe edition currently for sale online.
Contents very clean. Light foxing to first and last leaf, a little foxing elsewhere (mostly to margins, and around stitches), usual pale offsetting from plates, ribbon page marker detached (with fraying and wear to ends, plus offsetting to paper where laid in), untrimmed (exposed) edges dusty, with usual bumping, browning, foxing, nicks and wear. Endpapers with usual offsetting; front hinge two-thirds split (fragile), rear hinge with small tear. Top of page block with darkening. Binding somewhat loose. Boards and spine with scratching, staining, discoloration and marks as shown, bumping, rubbing and wear to extremities; paper worn through to corners, plus intermittently along edges; upper joint split (fragile), spine with small tears to head and foot.
